New Animal Control Regulations Take Affect
Following Changes

Montrose, CO — Following recent changes to the City of Montrose's code regarding animal control regulations, the staff at the Montrose Animal Shelter want to remind residents of the changes and how they may impact area pet owners.

On May 21, members of the City Council voted unanimously to repeal and replace Title 6, Chapter 2 of the official Municipal Code of the City of Montrose regarding animal control regulations.

A list of those changes is detailed below.

Section 6-2-2 – Vaccinations and Identification Required

City dog licenses are no longer required, however, it is required that dogs display a tag with owner contact information so law enforcement can attempt to return lost dogs to their owners without impounding them at the city’s Animal Shelter.

Section 6-2-5 – Animals Prohibited

No animals are allowed on any city sports fields, cemeteries, and non-grass playgrounds owned and maintained by the city.

Section 6-2-11 – Unattended Animal in Vehicle

Previously part of "Cruelty to Animals” section of the code, this issue is now a separate ordinance.  It is unlawful to leave pets unattended or confined in vehicles in unreasonable or dangerous temperatures.

Section 6-2-12 – Abandonment

It is unlawful for any person to abandon, or cause to be abandoned, any animal.  Changes to this section allow law enforcement to impound any abandoned animals in the city.

Section 6-2-16 – Farm Livestock

No roosters shall be kept, harbored, or maintained in the city.

Section 6-2-19 – Interference with Animal Shelter Employees

It is unlawful for any person to provide false statements or documentation or to not obey a lawful order of an animal control officer.
