Funding For Street Improvements
Receives Council Approval
Montrose, CO — City Councilors have approved approximately $2.9 million for street improvements this year as part of the Moving Montrose Forward (MoveMo) 2019 Streets Maintenance Project.
The money will fund 11 major and minor street projects in locations all over the city. The improvements are a mixture of routine street maintenance along with utility upgrades and new road paving.
The 2019 work is the continuation of a multi-million-dollar street investment by the city that began in 2018 with the largest project, the south Hillcrest Drive street extension, which is now complete.
“This year’s MoveMo street maintenance effort will spend the balance of a $5 million, two-year allocation dedicated to addressing deferred street maintenance," City Engineer Scott Murphy said. "Work this year will include full roadway rebuilds, asphalt overlays, and chip seals throughout the city and will be similar in scale to 2018’s street maintenance effort.”
The locations for this year’s street improvements were identified by the city's engineering and streets departments, following the 2016 Community Survey that highlighted the need for more investment in city streets. In that survey, a majority of respondents said the condition of city streets should be a high priority for city administrators moving forward.
From that survey the Moving Montrose Forward initiative was created, which places a focus on street maintenance, reducing traffic congestion, and improving pedestrian and vehicular mobility throughout the community.
The work to be completed in 2019 was awarded to Mountain Valley Contracting. Mountain Valley and United Companies were the only two companies to bid on the work.
This project joins another $13 million worth of capital projects taking place throughout the city this year. To learn more about current projects and receive updates on street closures and detours, visit the Moving Montrose Forward website, www.MoveMo.co
. Additional notices will be released to help the public locate street closures and detours as they occur.
