Western Colorado Conservation Corps to Begin Clearing for New
Recreation Trail

Montrose, CO – The Western Colorado Conservation Corps, (WCCC) will be visiting Montrose next week to clear the alignment of the upcoming Great Outdoors Colorado, (GOCO) Connect Initiative trail project.

The trail project, scheduled to begin construction in early 2019 will add 2.25 miles of recreation trail and include underpass crossings of Main Street and Townsend Avenue. Once completed, the city’s recreation trail network will be a continuous north-south route between the Colorado Outdoors development and the Montrose Community Recreation Center. The route will be almost entirely separated from vehicular traffic.

A two-million-dollar GOCO grant recently awarded to the City and Montrose Recreation District was the caveat in making this project a possibility.  The WCCC was also a key community partner in bringing this grant to Montrose.

WCCC crews will be clearing brush along the proposed trail alignment on Colorado Outdoors property and near City Market South on the east side of Townsend Avenue. Crews will camp on Colorado Outdoors property throughout the week and enjoy fly fishing lessons on the Uncompahgre River thanks to Ross Reels, Scott Fly Rods, and Gunnison Gorge Anglers.

"We would like to publicly welcome WCCC to Montrose and appreciate their help in making the upcoming recreation trail project a reality," said City Engineer Scott Murphy.

For more information on the WCCC please visit their website at www.wcccpartners.org. Any questions regarding the trail project may be directed to Scott Murphy, City Engineer at 970.901.1792.
