Montrose, CO — City Councilor Roy Anderson has announced he is stepping down from his position on the City Council effective April 7, 2021. Anderson wrote in a resignation letter to the council that a serious family medical situation requires his immediate attention. 

As set forth by the City Charter, the City Council will formally vote to appoint a replacement for the council’s District 3 seat at a future meeting.

“It has been the greatest honor of my lifetime to serve the citizens of Montrose on the City Council and I was especially honored to serve as the Mayor of Montrose during 2018 and early 2019,” Anderson said in his letter. 

In 2014 Anderson, along with his wife, Sandi, traded the Front Range of Colorado for the natural beauty around Montrose to retire after raising four children and finishing a successful career at Hewlett Packard. Anderson began volunteering at the city's Downtown Visitor Center where he developed a passion to serve and promote everything Montrose. 

In 2015 Anderson was appointed to the city’s Planning Commission where his curiosity for serving on the City Council first began to grow. 

In April 2016, Anderson was first elected to the council serving a four-year term representing the council’s District 3 seat. Anderson was elected by the council to serve as mayor for the 2018-2019 mayoral term. 

In April 2020, Anderson was elected to another four-year term in District 3 following the city’s municipal election. 

"It is my sincere hope that I will be leaving Montrose a little better than it was when I joined City Council in 2016," Anderson said. "I am proud of the significantly better working relationship with Montrose County than the relationship in 2016. I'm proud of the new businesses that have come to Montrose and created a more robust economy than existed in 2016."

“Roy has been a fantastic councilor. He has a genuine commitment to public service and the City of Montrose and our community is better because of him,” Mayor Barbara Bynum said. 

Anderson said he was proud to watch Montrose become "Gigabit City" with the deployment of fiber optic cable to "virtually all residences." He added that he was confident that the new electronic vehicle charging stations recently constructed in the city's parking lot on the corner of North First Street and North Uncompahgre Avenue "will bring new visitors and commerce to the downtown area as the pandemic subsides."

"The city staff is an incredible group of people. The citizens should be very proud of them, and it was a distinct pleasure for me to work with all of them, and be associated with such a great municipal government," Anderson said. "Montrose will always be in my heart."
