New Bridge Spanning Uncompahgre River Now Open

Montrose, CO — The new 100-foot steel pedestrian bridge spanning the Uncompahgre River at the west end of Ogden Road, previously called the Green Bridge, has reopened to pedestrian traffic.

The bridge provides an important link for pedestrians and cyclists using the city’s river trail system. The project has been ongoing since September when Con-Sy, Inc. out of Grand Junction, was awarded the project.

"The new bridge has been installed and is safe for pedestrian use," said Jim Scheid, public works manager for the City of Montrose. "The contractor performing the installation has a few remaining items before they will be 100 percent complete but those items are not related to the use of the bridge and are mostly cosmetic."

The steel bridge replaced the 60-year-old, green railcar bridge that used to cross the river near Ogden Road. In 2018 the city investigated the integrity of the bridge and its abutments and determined the bridge was unsafe and would need replacement.

The abutments were decaying and the rail cars employed in spanning the river were questionable, according to city engineers who consulted with DOWL, a local engineering firm.
