Montrose, CO — The City of Montrose continues its annual Spring Cleanup tradition, in tandem with its Earth Week celebration, by providing disposal and recycling services from a single collection point on April 19 and 20. Residents are invited to bring cleanup items to the drop-off site located off the San Juan bypass (U.S. Highway 50), directly across the street from the Sunshine Peak apartment complex. Signs will help direct residents to the drop-off location.

This year the city is teaming up with Habitat for Humanity to provide an additional eco-friendly option for disposing of gently used, unwanted items. Residents can bring any items that are suitable for donation and drop them off along with other Spring Cleanup materials. A full list of items that are acceptable for donation is available at www.buildinglives.org/inkind/.

The collection site will be open on the following days:

• Friday, April 19 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

• Saturday, April 20 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Habitat for Humanity will only be site accepting donations on Saturday, April 20 from 7 am to 7 pm. However, Habitat will be taking donations Friday, April 19 at their facility located at 1620 N. Townsend Ave. For more information contact Habitat for Humanity at 970.252.9304.

In 2018 the city disposed of 178 tons of trash and debris during the annual two-day cleanup. Over 20 cubic yards of green waste were collected and 23,440 pounds of recycled steel was hauled to Recla Metals. The entire 2018 collection operation included 300 hours of labor by city employees.

Items accepted at the event include landscape materials such as leaves, grass clippings, tree limbs (less than six inches in diameter), scrap materials, and unwanted appliances. A $20 fee will be charged for appliances containing Freon. All other items may be dropped off free of charge.

Routine household trash, hazardous materials, paint, tires, and electronics with glass screens, such as televisions, will NOT be accepted.

In addition to the annual Spring Cleanup event, the city offers special collection services for trash customers. Fees for this service begin at $15 plus equipment and labor costs. Collections are scheduled, as personnel and equipment are available. To schedule a special collection or to obtain additional information, please call 970.240.1480.

The City of Montrose sponsors and coordinates a full schedule of Earth Week activities each spring. A different theme is highlighted each year to raise community awareness of how individuals can help preserve a healthy environment for themselves and future generations. This year’s theme, Reconnect, is aimed at encouraging families and friends to venture into the Western Slope’s beautiful outdoors and “reconnect” with nature.
