Personal and Professional Background:
David and his wife Dawn moved to Montrose over two decades ago from Colorado Springs to raise their children in a wonderful small-town environment.
David grew up as the son of a small business owner and became one himself. He learned hard work and perseverance are what it takes for any business to succeed. As his father often said (quoting Samuel Goldwyn), “The Harder I work, the luckier I get.” David has tried to live by that motto. Life doesn’t just hand us as everything it takes to be successful. You have to earn it. So, it has been with his businesses and investment in the community.
A graduate of Auburn University in Auburn, AL, David received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Transportation & Physical Distribution & Marketing). He has taken business planning courses at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs as well as courses in sales and marketing offered by IBM and others.
David’s business background includes management and ownership in the moving and storage industry; the elevator and escalator industry (consulting as well as manufacturing); the transportation brokerage industry, as well as different retail businesses he has owned, or been in partnership with others.
Interested in public service, David has had the opportunity to hold elective office over the course of the last 30 years. His public service background is varied and includes a term as Councilman on the Colorado Springs City Council (1989-1993); Montrose City Council (2004-2008, Mayor from 2007-2008) and Montrose County Board of County Commissioners (2009-2017, 5 years as Chairman of the Board).
The White’s have six children, 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a beagle & a German Shepherd. They enjoy spending time with family and friends as well as having spring and summer weekend outings in the mountains of Western Colorado.
David has served on a variety of public service boards and commissions, which include Rotary Club; Drug Free Montrose County Committee; Montrose Regional Airport Advisory Board; Montrose Economic Development Corporation – City & County Liaison to the Board; Montrose Business Association; treasurer of his neighborhood homeowner’s association; and as well as others.
Fiscally conservative and a proponent of a businesslike approach to government, David strongly believes Montrose has unharnessed potential for growth. Agriculture and natural resources remain important in our region. Many rural regions are diversifying their economies to include manufacturing and services. While we are doing that, we must be mindful of the burden government has not to encumber its citizens with onerous taxes and deferred investment in the community’s infrastructure.
Using his many years of public service, David asks the hard questions and drills down through every layer of “political speak” to get to the truth. The public deserves answers to questions on how their tax dollars are spent. David is accountable to all.
