The Montrose City Council has set Wednesday, July 26 as the deadline for qualified electors to submit applications for the City Council vacancy created by Rex Swanson’s recent resignation. Applicant interviews will occur at the July 31 City Council work session, and a formal appointment will occur at the regular meeting on August 1.
The City Charter (Article I, Section 11) contains specific arrangements for resolving Council vacancies: "In case of a vacancy, the remaining Councilors shall choose by a majority vote, and within 30 days after such vacancy occurs, a duly qualified person to fill such vacancy. He or she shall serve until a successor is elected at the next ensuing special or general municipal election, whichever first occurs, and has been duly qualified and takes office."
To be eligible for appointment, applicants must be qualified electors and must have resided within the City of Montrose for 12 consecutive months preceding the actual appointment date. Due to the potential for applicants to be appointed to either the District II or At-Large seat, the Council has waived the requirement for applicants to reside within the district corresponding to the vacancy.
Applications are available online at CityofMontrose.org/CityCouncil or at City Hall (433 South First Street). Applications must be delivered to City Hall or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org no later than 6 p.m., Wednesday, July 26.
